Welsh Poet — Dylan Thomas

There is a lot of information to learn and digest about the life and writings of Welsh Poet Dylan Thomas. Despite the fact he abused alcohol, it is apparent he had personal issues and insecurities. That being said, however, he trumps his irresponsible behavior with his effects of languages and his passion for words. In 1982, a plaque commemorating his life’s works was unveiled in Poet’s Corner, Westminster Abbey.

Younger Years

Thomas was born Dylan Marlais Thomas on October 27, 1914, in Swansea located west of Cardiff in the southwestern part of Wales. Dylan’s father was a teacher at the Swansea Grammar School and his mother was a seamstress. Although Dylan and his older sister, Nancy, were raised around the influence of the Welsh language, the children of the Thomas household spoke English.

In his studies, English and Reading were his favorite subjects because he loved language. Dylan attended the grammar school where his father taught English literature. Dylan’s first poem was introduced in the school’s magazine which he would also edit. When he was 16 (1930), he left school to become a young reporter for the South Wales Daily Post. Two years later, he left this job to focus more on his passion for poetry. By the time he was 20, he was en route to London where he published his first book entitled 18 Poems.
