Switching Gears Into the Weekend

I’m writing this entry at the end of my work week. I was able to finish a bit earlier than usual today and have some additional time to switch gears as a result. This transition time is something I’ve been thinking about a lot lately. I had always been under the impression that the transition between my working and not working mindsets was an automatic one that could take place very fast. What’s been surprising me lately is how much work it seems to take to switch gears.

Switching gears has become much more of a concious effort than I had previously realized. It seems to take some period of time to allow myself to do nothing. By nothing I mean not trying to cross things off of one of my to-do lists. This feels like a no-man’s land for me and can be a very uncomfortable place. I have to fight the urge to get back to that comfortable place of doing, thinking this is driving me forward, making progress toward one or more goals.

For now, I’m trying to embrace the uncomfortable feeling of doing nothing, to see what happens when I come out on the other end of it. So with that, I’m going to keep this post short so I can start switching gears into the weekend.
