Beautiful Stamped Concrete Steps

Concrete Steps to Entryway

I was tired of having mud tracked through the house anytime the kids came through our unfinished side entryway. There are four steps leading up to our side entrance. The original stairs were just a simple gray cement poured by our house contractor. My husband and I agreed it was time to update this area.

We thought we might just paint over the steps and add a bit of plants and mulch to help with the mud problem. After a bit of research, we went with a stamped concrete overlay by Salzano Custom Concrete. We picked out a random gray slate pattern with off-white grout. This design and color scheme compliments the red brick of our house and privacy wall.

Easy to Clean Stamped Concrete

Concrete is economically priced, easy to maintain and we just simply sweep the dirt off or hose it down with power washer once a year. When the ground thaws out in the spring, we’re going to replant the garden area of our entire side yard. We’ll also add lots of mulch, which should help prevent the ground from getting so muddy from rain and snow.

If you want to add a bold shade to your project, color can be added to the concrete mixture before it is poured into molds and stamped with your desired pattern. Another way to create a designer look is to sprinkle a color hardener powdered across the surface. This is a permanent method of adding color that penetrates the top layer to a depth of about 1/8” thickness.

The surface can be further textured to mimic patterns of rough stone or even wood grain. A final sealing coat locks in the concrete and makes it resistant to water and stains. Our contractor says we should periodically reseal the surface of our steps every few years to maintain it.
