On Tuesday, a video posted to social media showed a 15-year-old Syrian refugee, Jamal [surname withheld], being essentially tortured at a school in Huddersfield, England, with his attacker dragging him to the ground by the neck, despite the victim having his arm in a cast due to a broken arm.
While pinned to the ground, his alleged attacker, a 16-year-old schoolmate, forces water from a bottle into Jamal’s mouth.
West Yorkshire Police confirmed in a statement that a “16-year-old youth has been interviewed and reported for summons, for an offense of assault.
How on earth did we get here?
You can be sure anti-Muslim hysteria has reached epidemic levels when children torture Muslim children for sport. Children!
Children are meant to be immune from the politics of division. They are meant to be chasing a ball, kicking a ball, playing video games, hanging with friends at the mall, making out with their girlfriend/boyfriend or doing whatever it is kids do for harmless fun today.
They are not meant to be torturing kids in a playground. They are not meant to think that doing so would be considered a normal way to spend a Monday afternoon, and thus we can only presume the alleged attacker must’ve been radicalized into violent anti-Muslim extremism somehow and somewhere.
A glance of the alleged attacker’s Facebook account reveals him to be a huge fan of notorious anti-Muslim hate preacher Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, aka Tommy Robinson. In fact, his account reads more as shrine to Robinson and his sympaticos on the anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant far-right.
Robinson has become a cause-celebre among Muslim haters on the political right, and was recently feted by US President Donald Trump’s one-time campaign manager Stephen Bannon as a “force of nature like Kanye West,” despite the fact Robinson said, “I’d personally send every Muslim that has come into the EU back tomorrow. If I could. Fake refugees,” and describing Muslim as “hook noses,” “inbreds,” and worse.
In his books, social media accounts, and books, Robinson routinely describes Muslims in genocidal terms used by the Nazis against the Jewish people, and it’s evident his followers are paying attention.
A recent government report found that four attacks been carried out in the UK over the past five years were perpetrated “by lone actors motivated to varying degrees by extreme right-wing ideologies.”
Among them was 48-year-old Darren Osborne, who drove his van into a group of Muslim worshipers near Finsbury Park Mosque, London, killing one man and injuring 12 others.
“Osborne had grown to hate Muslims largely due to his consumption of large amounts of online far-right material, including, as evidenced in court, statements from EDL leader Tommy Robinson, Britain First, and other,” said Mark Rowley, the outgoing Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police.
Clearly and evidently, Robinson is inciting violent extremism and terrorism against Muslims in the same way now deceased AQAP preacher Anwar al-Awlaki inspired his followers to carry out attacks against non-Muslims, but not only was al-Awlaki deemed a terrorist, despite never having carried out a terrorist attack, but also he was killed in a US drone strike for being exactly that — a terrorist.
Conversely, no such label is applied to Robinson, however, as he continues to be praised by politicians on the right, lauded with speaking engagements, book deals, and mainstream media appearances.
The similarities between the kind of extremism proselytized by Robinson and al-Awlaki could not be more obvious, with both having weaponized social media to inspire others to do their dirty deeds.
In 2010, Roshonara Choudhry, a former top student at King’s College, London, who dropped out of school after becoming mesmerized by Awlaki’s YouTube account, stabbed UK Labour M.P. Stephen Timms, because of his support for the US led war in Iraq.
If you can explain how Choudhry’s radicalization into terrorism against non-Muslims by Awlaki is any different to those who are inspired to carry out terrorist attacks against Muslims by Robinson’s social media platforms, then you’re not being intellectually honest.
Clearly, both the media and government authorities are failing to appreciate or get their heads around the growing threat Robinson poses Britain’s 3 million Muslims, which is alarming given hate crimes against Muslims in the UK have soared by 40% in the past 12 months.
Authorities can take a giant leap forward in reducing and mitigating the threat Robinson poses Muslims in the UK and Europe by identifying him for what and who he is — a terrorist preacher, no different than al-Qaeda’s Awlaki.
