The problem with paying for the media is that it simply further promotes the current practice that American’s have — wanting news that fits their agenda, beliefs, values. The American “news” consumer cares much less for accuracy than it does for confirmation of their/our opinions. Afterall, how many liberals are willing to pay an entity like Fox News? Or how many conservatives are willing to pay an entity like MSNBC (the absolute lowest rated US media outlet for accuracy, honesty and unbiased reporting — per several consecutive years of Pew Media Studies)? There is the approach that maybe we should pay the govt. via taxes to fund a media/news outlet! Look what happened at BBC — accused and shown to have been heavily biased in the past. Or even here in the States with NPR/PBS — also quite biased in their manner of reporting. The truth is quite simply, the US no longer has “news” and no longer has true news “journalists”. Journalism died as a profession decades ago . . . and there is no sign it is coming back.
