Google Me, Baby

When was the last time you googled yourself? Try it now. What pops up? Is there anything associated with your business/career, social media accounts or personal/company website? If someone is looking for you online, will they find an accurate representation of you this way?

Your profile can consist of many things and I’m a huge proponent for not attempting to tackle absolutely everything at once. Considering where you’re at right now, let’s take a look at the content you need to produce a great basic profile for use in different places:

1. Describe your value proposition in three key messages. What can you bring to a company or to your clients to make their lives easier, more productive and /or more successful? How can you help them achieve their goals? (This has as much to do with understanding your audience as it does with knowing what you bring to the table.)

2. Describe your main areas of expertise in three key statements. What past experiences do you have to place you as an expert in your field, as a solution to a client’s or a company’s problems?

Now take that gold and put together profiles that can work for you in various situations. (Think about what you would need it for online and offline according to where you’ll be seen).

Put together a quick pitch. Make a couple of versions. Start with a 2 minute profile — this will prepare you for those times when you meet someone at a networking event and have some time to talk about ‘what you do’.

Now take those two minutes and pare it down to 30 seconds. This is the elevator pitch. Be as succinct as you can. You have 30 seconds to let me know how you can make a difference in my life. Go.

Are you a speaker? Put together a speakers bio. You probably want this to be about 80-100 words. This is a succinct version of your personal profile. This can also be used as a public bio for proposals, pitches, on LinkedIn, industry profiles, etc.

You control your public profile. You provide the information to various sources to communicate exactly what people should know about you. How you want to be seen by the world, what you want people to know about you and what you do, is completely up to you.
