This is a great initiative. Finding a way to keep audiences on-site and in-article and taking an open, articulate and productive discussion — on topic, could be more fruitful. They stay on-brand and add value and plurality to the editorial experience. The Trust Project touches on this same issue you’re working on in its “public engagement” area.

Any work on extracting meta-data from user-comments; visualising key themes (not just individual comments) or facilitating a many-to-one or one-to-one discussion with authors would be helpful.
