Veganism is on the rise all over the world and, for many people, the decision to cut animal products from their daily consumption has been influenced by the world of entertainment with controversial documentaries, thought-provoking videos, and poignant films that are rolled out each year.

Although following a vegan diet can be difficult, reminding yourself from time to time why are you doing this is of great help which will keep you going during Veganuary and hopefully for the future if you chose to become vegan.

Without further ado, here you have different projects that will undoubtedly change your perspective in the world we live in. Ready?

Lights, Camera, Action!

Documentaries: Netflix Controversial Gems

Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret

In this groundbreaking documentary, we follow the filmmaker Kip Andersen throughout his journey into discovering what nobody is talking about when the world’s leading environmental organizations and governments discuss climate change: animal agriculture.

While uncovering the usually neglected truths about this industry, Andersen finds himself more aware of the potential dangers of filming his documentary which makes him doubt to whether continue or stop.

Both revealing and mind-blowing, Cowspiracy is ideal to understand how much animal agriculture has been looked over as an environmental problem even though we, as consumers, can make all the difference by choosing not to eat these products.

What The Health

Another work of Kip Andersen was what made me watch this documentary right ahead. Aside from exposing the hidden dangers in the average American’s diet, he also sheds light on the shadowy operations in the food industry. In my view, What the health could have done more research into nutrition science but is easy to follow for someone who is watching these kinds of documentaries for the first time.

Movies: Just Heartbreaking

Okja

The film revolves around the friendship of a young girl and an adorable genetically engineered pig named Okja, whose lives are disrupted by the sinister Miranda corporation’s decision to make this pig the face of a mass-farming initiative.

A satire on corporate greed and how awful we are, Okja realistically tackles the dark underbelly that we often don’t think of when we consume our food.

(when my friends and I watched it, most of us stopped eating meat so I suppose this is how the journey of many has started as well)

The Most Important Speech You Will Ever Hear

This speech is probably the most famous speech about veganism. It was held at Georgia Tech in 2010 by Gary Yourofsky and describes every aspect and every possible point that should lead people to veganism — literally, most of the excuses I had in my mind were disproved after watching this video.

But even though Yourofsky has certainly good reasoning and his conclusions are overall right, there are some exaggerations I realized later but it’s still a riveting must-watch.

Every Argument Against Veganism

Here Ed Winters from Earthling Ed takes on every reason why not to go vegan that he can remember making before he went vegan and debunks them with extraordinarily compelling arguments that go from cognitive biases and cultural habits to animal rights and the environment.

Sadly, on a global scale, vegans are still the minority. Meat eaters dominate popular opinions like the idea that animals are emotionless products meant to be killed and sold in order to make a profit so that we can eat whatever we want without any guilt. Each of the documentaries, movies, and videos recommended in this article proves this statement wrong.
