Imagine if the best job descriptions just came directly to you.

In the next 5 minutes you can setup a search query and google alerts that will bring the best job openings for your search, directly to your inbox every day. Stop searching, start finding.

Hey folks, I wanted to show you this cool little one-page app called Jobbie Cannon. It’s purpose is to create search queries for job boards. It allows you to add in the things you’re interested in, exclude the things you’re not, and it will generate relevant search queries for you across different job boards.

Key Steps:

  1. Open the Jobbie Cannon app.
  2. Add the specific job boards you want to search by entering their names (e.g., a16z.com).
  3. Identify key search words from the job description that are important to you. These could include skills, qualifications, or specific programs.
  4. Enter these search keywords into the app.
  5. Use the tilde (~) operator to indicate words that the search engine should return similar results for. For example, if you are looking for manager roles, you can enter “~manager” capture similar job titles like “team lead”.
  6. Identify any block words or terms that you want to exclude from your search. Enter these blocked words into the app.
  7. Once you have configured all the search parameters, click on the “Copy” button to copy the generated search query.
  8. Paste the search query into the Google search bar or any other job board search bar.
  9. Review the search results for quality and adjust as necessary
  10. Consider targeting specific companies by adding their job board to your search query.
  11. If you’re interested in working for startups Search “Top VCs in {your industry} Industry” and then add each VCs job board that lists roles at their portfolio companies to your search.

Cautionary Notes:

  • Ensure that the key search words and block words are relevant to your job search to avoid getting irrelevant results.
  • Double-check the search query before copying it to ensure that all the desired parameters are included.

Tips for Efficiency:

  • Save your copied search query in a note for future reference.
  • Use the shift + click shortcut to open multiple tabs for each new job opportunities.
  • Consider targeting specific companies by visiting their career pages for more tailored job searches.

In this video, I share a useful hack for job searching using Google Alerts and JaviCanon. I explain how to set up vanity searches to receive notifications for new job postings related to your role. I also provide tips for optimizing the alerts, such as selecting “as it happens” for real-time updates and filtering out irrelevant sources.

Key Steps:

  1. Go to google.com/alerts.
  2. Log in with your Google account.
  3. Copy the query from Jobbie Cannon for the desired job postings.
  4. Paste the query into the Google Alerts search bar.
  5. Click on “Show options” to optimize the alert settings.
  6. Select “As it happens” for the frequency to receive alerts as soon as Google finds new postings.
  7. Change the sources to “Web” to eliminate irrelevant results.
  8. Choose the language of your choice, such as English.
  9. Limit the region to your desired location, e.g., United States.
  10. Change the delivery option to “All results.”
  11. Click on “Create alert” to start receiving daily alerts with new job postings since the last update.

Cautionary Notes:

  • Make sure you are logged in with your personal (Not work) Google account to access Google Alerts.
  • Double-check the query copied from Jobbie Cannon to ensure it accurately reflects the desired job postings.
  • Be mindful of the language and region settings to receive relevant alerts.

Tips for Efficiency:

  • Regularly update the query to refine the job postings you receive.
  • Review and adjust the alert settings periodically to ensure they align with your preferences.
