Actually, in red and blue states, protest votes do make sense. If you live in a state where , in early November, you can see where the electoral college votes are going and your vote is not needed (say, to stop Trump) voting for a 3rd party candidate may mean that the third party might be taken more seriously in 2020 and perhaps included in the debates. I will split my ticket in Maryland and vote for a Democratic congress and Gary Johnson.
