Neil Young’s “Shut it Down” is a call to action piece of music released in 2019 amid political craze and prior to an election year. It evokes the reader to stand up against our government that is endangering the beautiful planet that we get to call home. The song speaks on the silence from the American people and an unwillingness to accept that the climate is changing. Through its lyrical content, tone, and musical arrangement, the song effectively uses rhetorical devices to convey its message and engage the audience.

Neil Young’s climate change initiative is a testament to his commitment to environmental activism. Through his extensive career as a musician, Young has consistently used his platform to raise awareness about environmental issues, particularly climate change. One notable aspect of his initiative is his vocal support for renewable energy and sustainable practices. Young has actively campaigned for the transition away from fossil fuels towards cleaner alternatives, emphasizing the importance of reducing carbon emissions to mitigate the impacts of climate change. Additionally, he has organized benefit concerts, collaborated with environmental organizations, and utilized his music to amplify the message of environmental conservation.

Young’s climate change initiative not only shows his dedication to preserving the planet for future generations but also inspires others to take action in the fight against climate chang. Neil Young is the cofounder of a nonprofit called Farm Aid whose mission is to help smaller farmers thrive while using practices that foster clean energy and no pollution. Since 1985, Farm Aid has raised more than $78 million dollars to support farmers.

Neil Young appeals to emotions by painting the scene that is reality. Through vivid imagery he sings of environmental destruction and total loss. The lyric “Look at Mother Nature on the run in the 21st century” evokes a sense of urgency and concern for the planet’s well-being. This lyric shows means By appealing to the audience’s emotions, Young compels them to empathize with the fight for environmental action. The repetition of the phrase “Shut it down” throughout the song serves as a powerful rhetorical device. It shows how determined we should be to create change in the environment as well as emphasizing the central message of the song. The repetitive nature reinforces the idea that immediate action is necessary to address environmental issues.

Throughout the song Young uses rhetorical questions that he is asking his audience. I don’t believe he is looking for answers but that he wants everyone to think about the effects of climate change. He uses questions like “What about the animals?” and “What about history?” We should want to be remembered by future generations as stewards to this planet not burdens. If our planet keeps progressing the way it is we will lose many species that play key roles in our environment. According to the World Wildlife Fund species are added to the list of animals negativly affected by climate change every year. These animals include the polar bear, snow leopard, tiger, giant panda, monarch butterfly, and many more.

Young uses irony through the lyric “ as cool as they can be” referencing the rising temperatures that the earth is experiencing. According to the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution the ocean’s average water temperature has risen 1.5 degrees since 1901. While this number seems small its is a major change for algae blooms, coral reefs, and the animals that reside in our oceans. Young has advocated for marine life through benefits and fundraisers.

In conclusion, “Shut it Down” by Neil Young is a compelling piece of music that effectively utilizes rhetorical strategies to advocate for environmental stewardship. Through its emotional appeal, repetition, and literary devices the song inspires listeners to reflect on the urgent need for action and encourages them to join the fight against environmental destruction. Neil Young’s activism throughout the years is truly inspiring as he has put his career on the line to call out industries and governments that harm our earth.
