One of my student writers just used the term “smoke bombed squirrel hole” to describe a character's voice. I don’t know what he means, exactly, but I can’t stop laughing. I think that needs to be the title of a punk album I’ve yet to record. Or a song. I love when students are inventive and take risks. Why else take a writing class? Try stuff out. Be weird. See what sticks. Will he keep that phrase during revisions? Who knows. But I’m glad it’s there in the draft. It tells me the guy is paying attention to how he words sound.
