The Hamaguriham Project, はまぐりはまプロジェクト

The old Japanese village of Hamagurihama stood for over 100 years in peace until the March 11th, 2011 tsunami that devastated the Tohoku Region of Japan.
A man named Kameyama grew up in a 100 year old house on top of the hill with his wife until March 11th, 2011, when the tragedy struck. The earthquake and subsequent tsunami not only took much of the village, it also took Kameyama’s wife.
The village, with only 3 homes remaining started to crumble over the immense loss. There seemed to be no hope. But Kameyama could not bear to see his childhood home disappear. So instead of succumbing to his grief he asked it to give him strength to save the town and its traditions. And so the Hamagurihama Project was born.
A cafe was created, along with a guest house, campsite, garden and grazing land for farm animals, among other things, and life is being breathed back into the quiet cove. Kamayama has said, “Though I will never be able to create the village I was born and raised in, I hope to welcome back the beautiful landscape and serenity of this place. I want Hamagurihama to smile and be calm one more.”
