Contrary to popular belief, nobody was burned at the stake in the Massachusetts witch trials. Not to claim that they were in any way humane: most were hanged, some died in prison, and one man was crushed to death with stones as the authorities attempted to torture him into confessing.

I *believe* burning at the stake was largely an Old World practice. At any rate, it never happened in Salem.
