I am in firm agreement with your overall message, and I thank you for a thoughtful piece of writing. I will push back on a couple points.
* All analogies are flawed. Any argument by analogy is sacrificing some accuracy in favor of simplicity or familiarity. This is why multifaceted discussion is so important: so we can communicate with more and more people by catching them “where they live” instead of first educating them in everything that informs our own points of view.
* I feel that in your point #1 you ignore the entire meaning of the $5 analogy. Either way the outcome is the same *except that you’ve been stolen from*! Surely that is the whole point. Maybe I would have been fine giving you $5. Maybe I wouldn’t. But you took that choice away from me. To say that the outcome is the same is to fall into the same transactional thinking you dislike.
