I was curious where you were going regarding “consent” but then I was quickly enlightened. Consent culture and other such discussions don’t dictate that it be the man (in male-female interactions) who takes the first action. If that is a ‘rule’, it comes from elsewhere. Just like the “shame” in taking the first action comes from elsewhere.

Is there something shameful in asking, “May I have this dance?” If not, find ways to make checking in on consent as smooth. I assure you it can be done, between people of good will.
