I took the photo above just after waking up from a nap, in my favourite spot in Madrid. This was one of the first times in my entire adult life I had truly allowed myself to just rest and it was one of the best choices I’ve ever made.
When say slow down, it actually has two meanings.
The first is a reminder that it’s okay to not to always be busy. In fact, it’s actually the healthiest way to live. I mean even God took a day to rest!
Creating natural cycles of work and rest will mean you get the best out of yourself, physically, mentally and emotionally. I don’t know about you but when I’m tired although I’m functional and I can push through, but internally… I’m a mess.
Breaking up periods of intense work with deliberate sessions or even seasons of rest will give you the space to enjoy the journey your on rather than deferring your happiness until you reach your destination or achieve your goal. Because the ugly truth is: if you’re ambitious you’ll never actually “arrive”. Your drive will make you strive for more, which in turns means you’ll continue to push your rest and your happiness to a day that won’t ever actually come.
I remember when one of my mentors taught me that rest is a gift and a skill, and until I learnt how to use it I’ll never be able to access all that life has to offer me. It took me a few years to truly embrace the lesson, but when I did, it changed everything.
As I write this I’m actually coming out of a season of rest which lasted for over 2 years. I think of it as a mini-retirement in my 20s and its given me a new lease on life and new perceptive. However, now that season is ending you’re going to see a lot more from me and I anticipate it’s going to be the best work I’ve ever done as well, in all honesty, I’ve now become the best version of me (well, at least so far! 😁)
…Oh yeah, I did say that “slow down” has two meaning right?
Well, I’ll have to come back to that another day 😜. But for now, I’ll leave you with this: “Some things are just too important to rush”.
See you soon,
