Cisco Umbrella is Hiring a Senior Product Designer

These are exciting times at Cisco. It’s been a year and a half since Cisco acquired OpenDNS, and all those months of hard work have reached a climax with our launch of Cisco Umbrella, the industry’s first Secure Internet Gateway (SIG) launch just a few weeks ago. We’ve taken our existing OpenDNS platform and enhanced it with additional security capabilities, turning it into one of the most powerful cloud security products on the market.

So what does this mean for the Cisco Umbrella product design team? It means we continue to undertake some very interesting design challenges. Umbrella has always been known for its simplicity and ease of use and as we add more and more features and capabilities to increase the power of our platform, we need to preserve that simplicity. We’ve designed a great, solid product, and we want to continue leading the industry in user experience. If you are someone who creates elegant solutions for complicated problems, we want to hear from you.

Being a product designer at Cisco Umbrella

The OpenDNS culture is still strong within the Cisco Umbrella team. We operate as a cloud-first startup inside Cisco and within that startup, our product design team provides a strong voice for customer needs and design thinking. We’re a tight little team distributed between our San Francisco and Vancouver offices. Our team members range in diversity and experience levels, but when it comes to skills, we all have one thing in common: we’re “full-stack” designers. This means we do research, interaction design, visual design, and sometimes even front-end development. Hiring generalists is a must for us, because each of our designers has complete ownership of a part of Umbrella. Each team member is a design leader in their respective scrum teams, and our senior designers are leaders in the organization.

Working together as product designers is critical. We are in constant communication, and we meet several times a week to check in, track each other’s progress, and provide feedback and support. Most importantly, we have fun together. We love offsite activities and happy hours. And doing silly stuff like this:

The team is strong, and finding the right cultural fit is just as important (or more) than finding someone with the perfect set of skills. We don’t hire divas and we don’t hire jerks.

Is this job for you?

You will love working here if you:

  • Enjoy all aspects of UX: research, interaction design, and visual design
  • Have solid professional experience designing software products (extra points for SaaS and enterprise)
  • Experienced with building prototypes of your designs with HTML and CSS/SASS/LESS
  • Find cyber-security exciting (extremely meaningful work)
  • Are familiar with methodologies like Design Thinking and Lean UX
  • Are a team player
  • Enjoy learning and teaching in equal measure
  • Are looking for the culture of a startup with the perks of a large organization
