Work From Home — Dealing With Distractions

Working from home has many challenges. Dealing with distractions is one of those obstacles that can disallow you to grow your business and make the most of your time. I have compiled some tips on how to deal with these distractions, and get your business, home, and time under control.
1. Clearly communicate your goals with everyone. If you are working from home, the chances are that you are the only one who is taking this “adventure” seriously. Sit down with your spouse, and other members of your household (I would even suggest to to include extended family in this, if they frequent your home) and be clear how serious you are about this business, and want to make it a success.
2. Clearly set and communicate rules. Set rules for yourself and those in your family about how you want to work on your business If you are choosing to work early during the day, make sure friends and family will not come over or call you during these hours. Set clear work hours, and stick with them. Working from home does not mean that you are constantly available to follow everyone else’s lead.

3. Involve your kids. Children that are involved in the process of working with you, will more likely leave you to your work when you need them to. They do not feel left out, are aware of what you are doing, and learn business skills along the way. The more involved your children are, the more encouraging they will be.
4. Do not allow distractions to become a crutch. You can not allow yourself to use distractions as an excuse to not do the work. It is easy to get caught up in the other activities that always will be piling up in the background, and if you are not careful, you can fall in the trap of using them against your own goals and progress. Doing dishes is easier then to deal with a complicated business deal. Tackle the business deal, and let someone else do the dishes, or let them wait.
What are your favorite ways to deal with distractions? Do you have any particular plans or tools you use, that make it easier for you to stay on target, despite working from home?
