Book Spotlight: why is the Sea Wall of Plymouth full of Cornish names

Aside: It’s an OCEAN wall, Claudia, not SEA!

I know. I tend to use the word interchangeably, like many English speakers, and people do the same in my native language, Portuguese. In case you’re curious:

Mar = Sea
Oceano = Ocean

But it’s not technically correct. Plymouth, for example, stands on the Atlantic Ocean, and Aberdeen on the North Sea. In retrospect, I should have called it “The Ocean Wall of Plymouth”, and I regret it a little, but I’ll roll with it anyway. 😛

On the to the curious fact! If you have read the comic, perhaps you remember a hand touching a wall scratched with names of people lost to the sea. And even though Plymouth is in Devon and actually only borders Cornwall, the wall was full of Cornish names! Why is that?

The picture above is maybe not the best example, as some of the names are spread around the outer part, but this is what I’m giving you to see on the internet. :P

In 2065, due to rising sea levels, most of Cornwall was under the sea (I know 2065 is in the future, but let’s pretend it’s in the past because it’s easier to read). As the peninsula sank, its inhabitants started migrating to Plymouth in waves because there was word that they were building a wall to keep the sea at bay. Most of the names are those of people who didn’t make it. Simba, Eileen’s sister, drowned while helping a group of refugees.

The story is perhaps too intense emotionally. But if you have picked up the book, I hope you enjoyed it, at least a tiny bit. 😳
