This is the most mind-blowing truth for most people (myself included). We become so accustomed to what we know — our “normal” — that we often don’t stop to think about what “normal” may look like for others.

However, the dangerous part is when we bulldoze through life not understanding that our normal is not the only one. This has philosophical applications beyond the scope of this article, but to stay on topic, I will say that when dealing with others and trying to get them to do what you want them to do (i.e. hire you) it is necessary that you open yourself as much as possible to their normal. This requires placing yourself behind their eyes, and seeing the world from their perspective to the extent possible.
