I love your idea Susan. I especially love that you articulated the importance of state and local governance (I hate to use the word politics because of the whole “running for office circus” and it’s connotations). State and local issues aren’t glamorous. They normally don’t involve big overarching social mega-trends that the media/reality television universe salivates over.
No matter what side of the political fence you may reside, you have to admire the efforts of the ‘right,’ especially ALEC. They saw the opportunity and seized it — not unlike a successful business person would; not surprising since ALEC is made up of business people. The ‘left’ on the other hand didn’t see the opportunity, and therefore have lost the race in the statehouses and local courthouses nationwide (even in states they definitely shouldn’t have). Personally, I believe we have Debbie Wasserman Schultz and her leadership deficiency to thank for that, but that’s a different story for a different day.
In addition to all the praise I have for your insight and exposition, I see a flaw in your method of funding. I don’t think it has a ‘snowball’s chance in hell’ (excuse the metaphor, but it seemed appropriate) of getting funded in the Republican dominated Congress. Exposing the antics of state and local governments via the efforts of your mini C-SPANs would run contrary to their power base created by the Koch brothers and ALEC.
Aside from that though … find another way to fund it and you’re on to something.
