Black Mirror does America; or, the Netflixization of season 3
Daniel Riesco

New networks do tend to change a show…for good or bad. However, I think you’re reading into changes in San Junipero a bit too deep. Dealing with the death of children would have taken away from the love story here — as he states, it’s really a whole other story unto itself. I do agree there’s a lack of gay characters in the series. But I don’t believe changing the protagonists to women was a Network choice. It’s freeing for the characters to enjoy their marriage in a time period when it wouldn’t have been possible. I don’t believe he suggests either character were looking to marry in the 80s, it’s just a decade they relate to.
