Osteoporosis is a medical condition which is characterized by a decrease in the bone density; resulting in the decrease of strength, making it fragile. It leads to abnormally porous bones like sponges. It weakens the bones and results in frequent fractures.

Factors which lead to the condition

There are certain factors which increase the chances of this medical condition, such as:

  • Female Gender
  • Personal history of fracture
  • Cigarette smoking
  • Thin and small body frame
  • Asian or Caucasian race
  • Family history of osteoporosis
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Low diet of calcium
  • Malabsorption
  • Low estrogen/ testosterone levels in women and men, respectively
  • Lack of exercise
  • Chemotherapy and many other health conditions

Symptoms of Osteoporosis

There are no particular symptoms of osteoporosis and can only be detected when a bone breaks. It is basically an extremely painful fracture which indicates the individual to get diagnosed and confirm if he or she is suffering from it or not.

Survival Story

Individuals who suffer from osteoporosis needs to be careful about fractures because it is very frequent with such patients. One such individual is Clayton Robert Hogan, who has been a hiker all his life, but got to know about his osteoporosis condition after he fell and broke his wrist. It came as a heart wrenching news to him, but soon he took it as a challenge and continued working harder.

To prove to himself, he climbed the Mount Washington after being diagnosed with the disease. He believed in himself and thought that if he stays at home, he will only get weaker. Official advice that was given to him was to take rest and completely avoid his new adventure, but he listened to no one and achieved success.

Climbing Mount Washington was not an extremely difficult task because it is not the tallest mountain in the world. What made it challenging was the New Hampshire weather where the speed of the wind reaches roughly 231mph, which is the highest recorded wind speed on the surface of Earth.

He chose the hike method when the temperature was not too low, but he still had to face the horrifically fast winds. He knew that a normal fall can shatter his bones and even his medical team advised him the same, but he did the climb anyways and shut everyone out.

Conclusion

Clayton’s success is not about his strength or his luck, it is rather about his attitude towards his medical condition. If more individuals look at their abilities more than their inabilities, there will be more Claytons in the world and a million more success stories.

Attitude is what matters the most. It defines how individuals will face difficulties and set their paths to achieve success. Failures are not the end either; they are mere indications which state that the individual needs to practice more and work harder.

To be the best in something, one has to become the best of himself and then try to walk the path because then, success will not be far away; just a few hardwork away.
