Today I want to write a little story about how I got into my current position as the lead mobile developer and share some tips that might help you in your journey. I know that if you clicked on this article you’re thinking one of two things, a) wow that’s pretty interesting I wonder how he managed that, and b) this kid is for sure not a tech lead and if he is he shouldn’t be. I mean that could just be a bit of imposter syndrome on my part, but either way, I just want to run two words past you all that are the reason why I have had any chance of being in the position I am in. The first is positioning, I have spent countless hours studying before and after work and I have spent a lot of time developing a wide network for people around me, both things helped me position myself to find the job I wanted. And the second is drive, I have pushed myself because I knew what I wanted to be and where I wanted to go, and this is just the start of my journey so stay tuned.
Now I don’t want to sound demeaning in any way because I’m not here to boast, but I am here to try and show you that whatever you want to do, you can! I mean this time last year I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and I was stuck in a dead end job that I honestly wasn’t the biggest fan of. If you have been following my blogs for a little while now you would know that last year I started a coding boot-camp and got my first job about 2 and a half months before I graduated, if you’re new I would encourage you to go and see how a coding boot-camp changed my life.
But anyway enough dribbling I’ll get into the main ways I got here and the ways you can get to wherever you want, and these points may sound cliche but they’re true.
The first thing I would say is to find a goal, mine personally is to be the CTO of either my own start-up or that of another company. No goal is too big, it is just a matter of how much you want it and the time and effort you are willing to pour into getting there. Also, goals are allowed to change and move because we are all human and humans change and evolve every day, but once you find something you connect with there will be nothing that can stop you.
The second thing after you have figured out where you want to go is to start acquiring the skills you need to get there, I have always been bad a public speaking for example and believe it or not leading a development process requires quite a bit of communication. So after I was comfortable with my programming skills I focused on my speaking ability by finding practice wherever I could, this came in the form of tech talks and mentor sessions, as well as reading a few books. Now, I’m still not at the level of someone who has been on TEDx or anything like that but I am way better than I used to be.
Thirdly I would say network network network! This, along with my desire to learn and be thrown in the deep end, is the main reason why I have the awesome job I have now. If you cultivate relationships with people who are in the position you want to be in you can learn so many lessons and meet people who are willing to give you a shot. Because at the end of the day people like seeing other people achieve their goals, especially if it helps their business or interests.
So to wrap it all up, I became a lead developer at 19 because I set myself a goal and worked my ass off until I had the skills to take on such a position. Then once I had developed the minimum skills I needed I went out and met people who were in the places I wanted to be in and learned more lessons from their experiences. Soon after I started applying and expressed my desire to achieve my goals and luckily I found a few companies that wanted to see me progress towards my goal and I had the amazing opportunity to choose the company I felt was the best fit for me. And after all that I am still drastically under equipt but I know that the deep end is where I learn how to swim and you can too. Every single person on this earth has the potential to go wherever they want and do the things that make them proud of themselves, so what is holding you back?
