The concept of marketing has evolved over time and continues to change to this day. The introduction of disruptive technologies such have had major impacts on marketing creating new approaches, data driven insights, and shifted to power to be more in favor of the consumer. The progress of marketing was occurring long before the introduction of the internet. Communication technologies such as magazines, billboards, radio, the telephone, and television where all pivotal milestones in marketing’s evolution. The mid-nineties was the biggest boom with the introduction of the personal desktop, mobile phones, internet, and smart devices. This has forced marketers to be more agile to the rapid change in the technology landscape and has made competition for consumers attention even more fierce.
This new era of marketing is now focused on digital, both inbound and outbound approaches, optimization of communication platform use, and leveraging big data. I foresee data playing an even larger role as data scientists create more refined predictive behavior algorithms. I believe the next era will transition into Artificial Intelligence as a main tool and the expansion of social media platforms as the dominant way of connecting to consumers. Both consumers and companies like Amazon, Google, and Apple are forging the way for towards this already, forcing the rest of the market and world to adapt.
