7 Steps to Install a Ceiling Fan Over a Light Fixture

Installing a ceiling is not hard as it may sound. If you are not quite sure what you are doing, you can always have a home inspector Largo FL install one for you. Tools and Materials Needed

· Hammer

· Drywall saw

· Circuit tester

· Wire strippers

· Screwdriver

· Drill

· Ceiling fan with mounting kit

· Support brace

· Wall control switch

· Wire nuts

· Nails

Getting Correct Size of Ceiling Fan

The larger your room is, the bigger the ceiling fan should be.

· Wall less than 12 feet: 36-inch fan

· Wall is 12 to 15 feet: 42-inch fan

· Wall over 15 feet: 52-inch fan

Removing Light Fixture

First, make sure to turn off all electricity in the home and use a circuit tester to make sure that power is off before you touch any electrical wiring. Next, disconnect the fixture wires, remove central mounting nut and any screws that hold the fixture in place.

Installing Support Brace

If you have access from above, make and install a support brace using a 2x4 nailed to the ceiling joists on both sides of the box location, making sure to position brace above the ceiling box. Use wood screws to attach the ceiling box securely to the brace. If there is not any access from above, install an expanding metal brace from below to support the ceiling box and fan.

Installing Fan Mounting Bracket

Attach mounting bracket to ceiling box following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Connecting Fan Motor Wiring

Mount the fan motor to the bracket by inserting the swivel ball into the bracket. Next, attach the fan motor wires to the house wiring. Always follow the manufacturer’s wiring instructions very carefully. Also make sure to use wire nuts to secure all wiring connections.

Attaching Fan Blades

You need to attach a blade mounting bracket to each fan blade. Next, attach these brackets to the rotating bezel below the fan motor. All mounting screws need to be tight.

Attaching Light Fixture

If a light fixture is included, assemble the fixture and switch housing. Next, attach fixture to the fan motor assembly. Connect all wiring according to the manufacturer’s instructions for the ceiling fan. Finally, put on the glass dome or light shade.

Installing Wall Control Switch

Before installing wall switch, you first need to check your unit and switch wiring with a circuit tester to make sure that all power is still off. Next, you need to install the fan control switch according to the manufacturer’s instructions that came with the ceiling fan. Finally, you can turn the power to the house back on and test the ceiling fan and light operation to make sure all functions are working correctly.
