Illegal immigration cannot be stopped, but it can be greatly reduced. A wall worked quite well for the Soviet Union in keeping people in; a wall can keep people out. Israel’s wall around Gaza has been very successful, although it is not impermeable. Making a border work takes the political will, however: there are special interests on both ends of the political spectrum that want illegal immigration to continue. If we want to help refugees, we need a legal process: having people come her illegally — bypassing our laws — is not the way. Some are seeking a better life — like my mother who came here legally — but some are gang members from Central America, and I personally know of people from Mexico who left their children here with relatives, to work and then send money home.
