Lester Holt may not ask any questions about energy or climate change in the first presidential debate tonight*, but the topic is too important to ignore and we hope that the candidates will discuss their climate change and clean energy strategies to protect and enhance our environment, national security, economy, and health.

Environmental organizations have started an online petition requesting debate moderators to ask presidential candidates about climate change, stating:

“Climate change is happening now and we need immediate action to mitigate the devastating impacts. The next president of the United States will have a tremendous opportunity to fight climate change and keep the U.S. on a path toward a clean energy economy, but the first step toward making this a reality is ensuring that voters know where the candidates stand on the issue.”

We hope to hear the words “climate change” (and at least four other climate related words — bingo!) tonight. If you’re also hopeful for discussion on climate change during the debate, please feel free to download our bingo boards.

*The 2012 presidential debates featured zero discussion of climate change and it was not expressly included in the Commission on Presidential Debates’ list of three topics for tonight’s debate: “America’s Direction,” “Achieving Prosperity” and “Securing America.”
