Intro to VR

Tonight I had the joy of introducing a couple of my friends to VR. There are two paths I typically take to introduce someone to VR.

Path 1: immediately show the best demo. Take them into Tilt Brush on the HTC Vive immediately and blow their mind. Do a few other demos, like Fantastic Contraption, Job Simulator, and Selfie Tennis. Maybe show them the Oculus with short films or a few basic video games. Never show them the Samsung Gear VR or Google Cardboard.

Path 2: ramp up slowly. Start with Cardboard or Gear VR, then Oculus, then the HTC Vive. Save the best towards the end, so that the experience continues to get better.

If VR progresses as quickly as I hope it does, I’ll never have to demo inferior VR experiences like Gear VR or Cardboard. While Gear VR and Cardboard are great for getting the general public in tune with VR, they’ll never be as good as a polished, room-scale VR experience. Hopefully, the best VR experiences and storytelling that we find on the Oculus and Vive will continue to get better. Meaning: wireless headsets, less buggy interfaces, higher resolutions, smaller headsets, and easier setups.
