Why no one should understand your startup better than you
Sorry for the long hiatus of not posting some content in a while. I apologize and I'm trying to make a better habit of it, and start writing more frequently.
Writing all of a sudden for me is super easy and I enjoy doing it. The bonus is that I have a tonne of experiences to write about, and millions of things pop into my head on a daily basis that I should be writing down. That’s where the thought for this post has come from.
I just finished my first presentation presenting myself, my company, and where I want to take it in the future. Growing up, I was the guy in school who loved presenting. I still enjoy it, but the one I had today was completely different than anything I have ever done.
It was a presentation in front of my peers about my new company Connected Getaways. I entered into a competition at my old college and 3–5 teams will win resources and some money to help build out and expand their business. Thinking back on the presentation and the questions I was asked from the judges, I realize a few areas that I can tweak and improve on for future presentations. The judges were firing questions at me on all cylinders which is a good sign I think.
The real value I got from the presentation was through noticing that not one of those judges will ever be close to knowing what I know about my company, vision, or the industry we are disrupting.
This came to me right after the presentation, and even when some of the judges were asking their questions. I loved how one of the judges pointed out
“I forget whatever you had at the start because what is it nowadays, we have an attention span of about 2–3 seconds?”
This was honestly a great point by one of the judges and something I will take with me into future presentations.
TIP: You should try and have some big accomplishments, or an awesome conclusion at the end that really makes the audience or judges go BOOM!
I unfortunately didn't do this as well as I thought, but hey I love being able to correct myself and make things better. There is always room for improvement.
Back to my main point of this post; When you are building something and have spent countless hours researching the industry, competition, and validating your idea. You know that industry and concept pretty damn well. No matter if its someone from down the street, or it’s the best VC in the world, you need to take everyone's comments with a grain of salt.
The questions I was being asked, some of them were appreciated with great points, when others were complete ludicrous because that person has no idea about the industry, or even the concept I just presented to them.
If they don’t understand the industry, they wont understand the concept.
Don’t get me wrong, I'm not saying that every comment from a VC or judge isn't valid, I'm just saying that if someone asks me to completely switch my business plan, because they think I should focus on a different demographic, that’s their opinion. If you are a smart founder with a solid vision for your company, you should know what’s right for your company. Not that person. So I will take their comments with a grain of salt. After all some people just like to hear themselves talk.
I hope someone reading this gets something from it because I want to provide insight into my experiences, and help others who decide to tackle entrepreneurship and their passions alongside me, or after me. Life is about giving back and this year I want to inspire others to follow their dreams.
