On Electability and “Electability”

Hi Tom, I agree that Momentum membership or support is a largely untapped resource for transforming politics. The notion that all we can do is hope for or door step to ensure that there are enough Labour MPs so that there can be a Labour Government is not an inspiring clarion call when most/many of those MPs will be the same people who always support military intervention and many of whom want to undermine and fatally damage a Left-led Labour Party. Knocking on doors for Harriet Harman, or for that matter, attending the branch meetings, just doesn’t do it for me. Having been away from the LP for a very long time I do find it extremely deferential to its elected ‘representatives’.

I do however think that detractors have a point when they say that it isn’t enough to be a protest movement and wonder whether real political leadership may come from an activism that is just that: active autonomous work with a political profile, possibly along the lines of some of the ideas you suggest. Whether that will be ‘allowable’ within the structures of the Labour Party is, I guess, questionable.

Hope to meet up at some point, hope all well with you.
