Hi! My name is Diego, but for now call me Damascus. This is my first time EVER writing a blog for this thing called ‘Medium’. (Also, this is my first time writing anything besides school, so if you see any mistakes I made, comment down below. Tips would be helpful as well.)
Wine has a long and rich history in human existence, so yes, our love affair with the destroyer of mental health is ancient. One theory suggests that fermentation of alcohol tools off sometime between 10,000–8,000 B.C.
Sadly, there aren’t any bottles left from that era. -I mean, they’re thousands of years old, why would they still be around? Right?
No, there is in fact, not a single one left from that era. (Haha, you probably thought there was, but back to the topic)
BUTT, the bottle of wine I’m referring to is the Romer Wein, or the Speyer wine bottle, it’s at least 1,650 YEARS OLD. (Not as cool as 10,000 years old, but still pretty old) The 1.5-liter glass vessel was discovered during the excavation of a Roman nobleman’s tomb in modern-day Germany.
Now, there are two questions left unanswered:
- What does it smell like?
- How does it even taste?
Fortunately, they can’t be answered. Why? Hell, if I know, experts are uncertain what would happen if the liquid were exposed to air. Would it cause an explosion equivalent to that of a modern-day grenade? Who knows? I’d love to hear your theories about it!
