Train whistles and plans.
I live in an apartment two blocks from train tracks and I’m always reminded of the movie It’s a Wonderful Life and of when George Bailey says,
“You know what the three most exciting sounds in the world are?…Anchor chains, plane motors, and train whistles.”
The train whistle just blew and this time I’m reminded that in the fall I most likely won’t be living here, that next summer I will hopefully be traveling again (in Chile this time), and next year I could possibly be living in a new city. So many exciting things are in the near future. And it’s funny, because even though I’m not sure what I’d like my vocation to be for certain, I have a list of nearly one hundred places I’d love to live in or visit.
So, even though I agree with Mr. George Bailey, I think that I could add about ten million exciting sounds and moments to his list. Sounds and moments that persuade me to travel by their very existence and inadvertent promises.
