On the next Arrested Development

The FOX-Netflix sitcom, Arrested Development, has been making audiences laugh since 2003. Ever since the show died and revived twice, fans cannot get enough of the Bluth family. With the cliffhangers that season five has left us with, what do the writers have in store for us?

In October of 2011, the cast of Arrested Development reunited for a panel for The New Yorker Festival. During the panel, writer Mitchell Hurwitz mentioned that they were intentions of producing a fourth season that would lead into a film adaptation. Since 2011, there have been further instances that referred to the idea of a movie. Since then, we’ve been given season 4, the season 4 remix, and season 5.

My thought process on the matter is that there will be a movie- but that’s it. I think it’s more likely that we’d get a movie that answers the questions left from the end of season five and then they end the show like that. The reason for that is that the show has already been cancelled twice and many fans are unhappy with the last season, much like fans of The Office that hate the show after Michael Scott (Steve Carrell) leaves the show. It would make more sense for the writers to give AD fans proper closure by giving us a movie and ending the show there.

While I’d like to believe that Arrested Development has a few more seasons in it, I don’t think the fanbase will stick around for it. The timeslot for the show when it first aired on FOX in 2003 didn’t do it justice and it never really picked up the love it deserves, so ending the show off with a movie would be a great idea.

Once the pandemic ends, I think “on the next Arrested Development,” the writers will hopefully release an Arrested Development movie and give fans the closure we are all looking for.
