Go to any tech Meetup in the UK, and ask the audience to raise their hand if they have a hot coral Monzo card in their wallet — chances are most hands will enthusiastically shoot up. The love for this bank is palpable (and I mean, who loves a bank?). So I was thrilled when Stephen Whitworth, Data Engineering Lead at Monzo, signed up as a speaker for the second London dbt meetup.
Stephen’s team is currently in the process of rolling dbt across their data team — this includes data engineers, data scientists, and data analysts.

The natural state of the universe is chaos: entropy tends to increase in closed systems, and there’s really nothing that we can do about that. So too is the nature of data warehouses: unless action is taken to maintain order in your data warehouse, it will inevitably spiral into a hard to navigate, hard to operate collection of objects that you’re too afraid to delete. While maintaining databases was once the job of dedicated Database Administrators, these days it’s common for no one (or rather, everyone) to be directly responsible for maintaining order in the database.

An actively maintained warehouse…
Each week, dbt is being used by more data teams to solve more problems. Part of this growth means we are seeing new members join the dbt community who come from a wider range of backgrounds when it comes to transforming their data.
Since we first started building dbt, we’ve been very opinionated about our product design philosophy. We have strong opinions about how the overall data stack should be constructed that dbt fits into as well as dbt’s role within that stack. …
