I would love to see this trend get more attention from the standpoint of starting a discussion about the value and meaning of the parts of human life that make us different from animals. The good news is that a lot of this discussion has already taken place and been written down. The bad news is that our culture* has forgotten about it, or — worse — knows it’s there but doesn’t recognize its value.
We will have a lot more leisure time; two crucial questions will be what will we do with it, and what should we do with it?
- * Our culture is what Jonathan Haidt calls “W.E.I.R.D.” — Western, Educated, Industrial, Rich, and Democratic.
