As time goes by …

Thank You for this wonderful story, Wialin.

It made me nostalgic. Additionally, it brought up deep admiration for people like Ben and Larry for their constancy.

Your story reminded me of my early days in computer Business.
I was this important years younger than Troy back in the 80ies. I sold these Oki printers for a shop as I was about 15years old. They sold like hell. It was no sales effort at all. You just need to have them in stock and carrying to the cashier.
I started my professional service carreer about 10 years later with comparable experiences to Troy — except, all my clients switched to newer (Windows) versions or retired that piece of software forever. Maybe it was this 10 years later that made the matter.

What did I learn from this story?
It is not Software craftmanship that antiquates. As long as important parameters stay as they are, You are still able to operate effectively. Efficiency is another story …

But, as Business changes, You need to change supporting tools and find or train people to operate.
That is the reason, why Ben and Larry could use their solutions for that long time.
They do not have the pressure (“need”) to fit into ever changing, surrounding structures.

If You have that need, You may risk a glance at my blog at http://up2u.blog
