Clever & Smart
As I was young, there were these comic books, You might also remember from the title of this blogpost.
What I remember most these days is the stupidity of the spies fighting against each other.
These days, we are all surrounded by smartness. Everything and everybody needs to be smart, it seems. Some of us feel a certain pressure from it. Others search for identifiers to orientate against.
What shall this smartness be? How to I recognize? How do I achieve?
So, let us get some understanding from terms and conditions.
As always, terms can be used supportive and insulting.
In case of doubt — just assume, I concentrate on the supportive aspects.
The clever act from what is at their hands. They use, what they see and do not hesitate to trial and error.
In fact the clever work around every obstacle they face to get what and where they want.
From my perspective, the clever focus on effectivity. But, they act also focused on the moment and very often on their personal needs and demands rather than future benefits and colleteral results.
The clever often rather acquire something than achieving abilities.
The clever are the better stupid.
The smart act from knowledge and understanding. Knowledge can gained from lessons in school or lessons in life.
Some therefore differ between so called “book-smarts” and “street-smarts”.
Focus of the smart is not only on efficiency, they also understand importance of effectivity.
Sometimes, smart people need support in practical abilities. People with a certain dominance in theoretical abilities will do better when they team with somebody who is able to realize practically.
These practioneers can be street-smarts as well as clever people.
- If You team with smart people, You can win them to achieve a shared goal.
- If You team with the clever, You offer something in exchange to support.
The smart are able to realize effectivity by walking the efficient way.
Whatever it takes.
In most cases, timing is the key to success.
There is no need for the right, when it is provided too early. There is no worth in improvement if there is no demand, anymore. Challenge is, to learn what will be needed then and to deliberate practice what is needed now.
This fundamental insight is one key factor to Prussian success in educational system. By learning dead languages, history and politics, You get prepared to make Your way in an unpredictable future.
By the way, this was started in Berlin about 200 years ago and is still remembered by those who benefit from this approach to wholistic education.
In fact, it is a small minority between the total number of students that are released to the market of life, each year.
All the others concentrate more or less on science and economics which was helpful for their parents and prepares for an economic reality which will be vanished in 20 years or even faster. These decisions are fully understandable from evolutionary perspective, biology of learning and neuroscience.
But, will it prepare for the future they face?
Will that pay the loan on their university education and their house later in their life?
It is hard to tell what stupidity is all about. Some name the under-educated to be stupid. Others name people and actions stupid, when differing from their — often unspoken — expectations.
Some call collateral results stupid, if they are unintended in particular occurrence.
Let’s approach it this way:
- Stupid is any action, that is neither appropriate nor in condition to achieve a specific goal — impossible from the beginning.
- Stupid is any action, that consumes without paying off in at least same amount — but eventually in different currency.
What I did not understand for a very long time was
I heard it first time from a far relative, a former BCG consultant.
Now, more than 20 years later, I understood. As I heard it first time, simplicity — from my understanding — was and still is something very hard to achieve.
It takes hard to free the statue from surrounding marble, You know.
Now, I got some insights in Taylorism and industrial production — which was never really my world. But in their terms, it is most efficient to show certain people what to do without any investment in explanation. Only physical action is needed in volume - thoughts were needed once when the blueprint was designed.
Works as long there is no need to change the plan.
But, as I learned from military guys
A plan is valid until You face the enemy.
There is some wisdom in this. And there is no need for kill to get the point.
Many people were raised and tought on base of an illusionary security.
They were told, that they will be successful by reproducing what is requested. You know that from testing vocabulary in class rooms or spelling contests on stage.
Works fine as long as demand exists and delivery pays off.
And as long as people believe in that.
But in long term?
How could anybody be sure that the same they learned once is still needed when students start to work in real Businesses.
One answer: ignorance of cycles in economy.
You might use this reminder to take a short lookup after Kondratiev.
People need certain education to realize — and experience.
Even teachers need that. But, not to pass their exams …
The stupid have no clue. They are just reproducing what they are told or what they perceive around them. Monkey see — monkey do!
Very interesting variant of so called stupidity: Cargo Cult
The clever know what to do, when they face “it”.
The smart know why to do it.
/what are humans good for?
Guess, who will be most succeful in case of slight deviations in context?
- What, if somebody jobs to acquire money?
- What, if a job can be automated?
- What, if automation fails due to changes in environmental conditions?
The stupid hope to be instruments in production processes by doing exactly what is requested. The clever use a processes to serve their needs and wants.
The smart design what generates benefit whenever used.
Who do You want to be?
/You are the Designer in charge of Your future self
Do not learn what is requested, only.
Understand relationships between current demand, its shapes and covers perceive from requests and Your determine Your position in the wave build from delivery chain.
From this understanding and under progression of time, You will find Your chances to succeed in every action You perform.
Start now, if You had not already started.
It will take 30 years and more for wholistic mastership. Remember Picasso …

Live long and prosper.
Life runs in circles. Some are smaller, some are bigger.
In the end, there is no end — only another beginning.
Talk to whom it might concern. And share what matters to You!
