A stretch 4 is a big man who can “stretch” the floor with his ability to shoot from range, ideally from 3 pt range. A 3 and D wing is a wing player who is prized for his defensive ability and can hit a spot up 3 pointer of the catch.

Main difference is the size of the player (big v. wing) and the fact that 3 and D players are known for D. Stretch 4s who can’t rebound or block shots have fallen out of vogue unless they can switch screens in the current perimeter heavy climate of the NBA.
