Day 8, weeknights at the gym
As a HS BB Coach, and parent to a few pretty good young ballplayers, you’ll usually find me at the gym at least a couple nights a week during the summer.
Please don’t picture the overbearing coach, dragging his kids to the gym. I never even ask them to go. They ask me. They just love to play the game.
There are many times I’m not feeling it, and I don’t want to go, but I usually do.
So far in their young hoops careers, their dedication has paid off pretty well. They have both developed into pretty good players. In fact, in the last 5 years they have each won the local “hoop shoot” contest 4 times (the last 3 in a row for both).
I remain hopeful that they will continue to grow and develop as players. There are no unrealistic expectations here, although they both have pretty big dreams.
It’s a hard line to walk, trying to manage expectations, while allowing them to dream big dreams.
The main thing for me, is that they enjoy it, and their dedication to the sport. Hopefully they will see and recognize the benefits of hard work, and that will help them through the rest of their days.
