One the best pieces of advice my mentor gave me many years ago was, “When you are in conflict with someone, don’t push back.” As a young professional, I was shocked and more than a little frustrated. What did that mean? What if I can’t defend myself when someone says something wrong about me?

As crazy as it sounds, my mentor was 100% right. This counterintuitive way to diffuse conflict and difficult conversations has saved me from several challenges over the course of my career.

It starts with perceptions and expectations.

From time to time, you will experience challenges and difficult conversations. Whether it’s a personality…

“I feel pulled in 10 different directions at once!” exclaimed my client, Clara.

As a new leader, Clara wants to stop wasting time and increase team productivity. However, with so much on her plate, it’s a real struggle to keep in touch with her team. Clara knows that she has to be engaged as a leader (and not just a boss), be supportive and provide direction…but not become a micromanager.

“I don’t have time to micromanage anyone!” she said to me. Clara has a lot to juggle and doesn’t have the bandwidth to be as available as she would like…

As a leader, you can do a million things correctly to win the respect of your team. But if you fail to do what is right, even when it’s incredibly difficult, it can cost you that respect. It’s more popular to discuss and encourage the positive characteristics of leadership. We don’t often want to focus on the tough choices that leaders must make to ensure amazing leadership.

As an executive career growth coach, I’ve seen that one of the most overlooked critical skills to ensure leadership is making hard decisions with grace and professionalism. There are tons of positive aspects…

How do ‘they’ do it? Elon Musk, for example, has shared some of his core values for being effective with his employees. The good news is — you don’t have to be Elon Musk, famous or even experienced to benefit from the 5 counter-intuitive habits of high-performance professionals.

It’s a pity that I had to learn the hard way. It took me valuable years to realize that almost everything I was doing was wrong!

I wanted to make sure that I was a shining example of a ‘hard worker’ so I never took the time to chat with my coworkers…

I love what I do. I love it so much that it almost ate my life, ruined my friendships, and my health. As crazy as it sounds, working on my passion almost ruined my career.

I guess I finally woke up to the fact that I loved my work a little too much after I was headed towards the second burnout in my business. I’m ashamed to say that it actually took that long for me to finally realize that I was turning my passion, my dream, and my drive into entrepreneurial self-slavery.

As my own boss, I worked much…

“He is mad that he didn’t get the promotion. He feels that, because of his MBA, he should have been chosen for an upper management role. But, he hasn’t done the work or developed the leadership skills to prove that he’s fit for the role.” exclaimed Denise. She said: “He thinks his fancy MBA will guarantee him a promotion!”

Denise wasn’t happy with her young manager, who hadn’t shown any desire to improve himself but fully expected to move up based on his graduate degree. Unfortunately, your MBA won’t guarantee you better opportunities. …

Historically kindness is often considered a weakness in the world of business. After all, we don’t want to subdue the fire that drives us to be successful and move up the ladder of the corporate world! Everyone knows you can’t be successful by being a doormat! Being kind has nothing to do with being a doormat and everything to do with strength. There are remarkable benefits of kindness at work.

Change your perspective, find your potential.

We are a culture of comparison and acquisition. We constantly seek the newest, best rated, most popular and ‘cool’ things in life. We have expectations to meet. Expectations from ourselves, our parents and our friends. We think by meeting these expectations, acquiring the newest and the best we are obtaining success. In actuality, your success assumptions hold you back from reaching your potential and finding happiness.

Our success assumptions are where the trouble begins. You cannot acquire success based on external expectations because success is entirely in your own mind. You decide whether you are successful or not, no one…
