I get this question mostly from the people that are consciously trying to stay in a positive frame of mind throughout their day. I have often wondered about it myself.

Negative seems to be a staple of local and the world news and social media feeds. Add to that the gossips and scandals we hear about in daily life, and the thoughts that sneak into our consciousness, it seems that we can’t catch a break from all of this no matter how hard we try.

Hardwired for Negative

Well folks, it turns out that we should not be so harsh on ourselves for this negativity creep after all. I was researching some material and ran into several peer-reviewed papers on the topic of negativity bias in human beings. The authors of these papers unanimously found that humans have an inherent Negativity Bias.

What this means is that they discovered, without exception, that given two events of equal intensity, the negative events (emotions, news, interactions, memories in the case of a trauma) have more influence on us psychologically, than the positive events. That we are hardwired for negativity.

A case for more compassion

Should we then just give up trying to be more positive? Not really.

What this does mean is that we should practice more compassion towards ourselves and others for not “thinking positive”’ all the time. Furthermore, The nature of biases is such that they can change with a change in our mindset. We need to trust in our ability to make this change.

In the fight against negativity, we are David fighting Goliath. Acknowledging that we face a stronger opponent should also help us put things into perspective.

It is important to note that negativity and pessimism are not always a “bad” thing. Throughout the course of evolution, negativity and pessimism saved our ancestors from peril enough times for us to see the light of the day. For us to remain grounded in reality, especially when it comes to decisions involving risk, mild pessimism and negativity definitely have their place.
However, as we evolve and understand our nature, we must adjust and try to find a balance between the negative and the positive.

Have a good day!
