Yes, thanks for telling that story. I’m sure I was half-aware of this — mastery is hard. But as I told the story, experienced it myself, and hear your story, I think I hadn’t given this pattern enough weight. In Once a Runner, he describes training as being like a spiral cyclone. Sometimes the wind whips you around and up, but just as often you go down. What matters is that you’re gathering momentum for another upswing. It’s hard to see that in the moment though.
