Team Bonding and the birth of a DAC
It was late afternoon in Barcelona, far into our second day of the second Giveth team bonding and close to reaching the end of our meeting. Taking a few moments to socialize and hangout as some team members departed, Griff Green & Jordi Baylina get a call from the Swarm City guys (Giveth has a strong bond with the Swarm City team) that triggered an immediate reaction to the alarming news: A few well known multisig wallets were under attack.

It was almost like watching action heroes in a film being summoned to rescue the world from villains; within seconds, a sudden rush of adrenaline dominating the bodies and minds of the Whitehat Group (WHG), altruistic community members that safeguard the wider community’s interests, was CALLED to ACTION. The mission: WHG to secure the funds of wallet owners as well as Giveth’s development fund, all potentially vulnerable to be victims of the confirmed attacks. There was no hesitation, just a professionally self-organized team in action, taking control of the situation that prevented a substantial loss estimated to be more that $180M (between ETH and Tokens)
While confronted with the fear of potentially losing all our funds, I couldn’t help but feeling fortunate of having such characters among us. Protecting our assets, demonstrating their determination to fight the evil and embodying all the super powers necessary to win the Good Fight — the WHG (a network of security specialists and experts in Solidity) was unveiled. It was evident to me that I was in the right place, with the right people at right time, sharing the same values and a strong sense of unity that discerns most people in this Community.
At Giveth, we often engage in long discussions on the type of campaigns the Giveth platform will support and more specifically, how to ensure that the world is made a better place as a result of these campaigns. This very evening, the core of this team shared nothing more than the essence of what is being built, the very example of a community that is aligned to a cause that everyone feels passionate about and wants to support. We became a self-organized, Decentralized Altruistic Community (DAC) working in parallel to support the WHG’s rescue mission.

A lot of work is yet to be done to return things back to ‘normal’, saving the world is a huge task and does not come without ultimate sacrifices.
The WHG continues to work tirelessly to ensure the purposely-hacked accounts get their funds back. Vulnerabilities in the multisig contract were identified, fixed and its security restored.
Another lesson learned that only makes this community stronger and wiser.
As for our friends in Swarm City, we strongly support their cause and stand behind promoting ways to restitute the stolen funds.
In the meantime, the Giveth DAC is more than motivated to keep building the Giveth platform and unleashing a new way to donate and connect communities around campaigns they want to support.
