You’ve read my mind with this article :) I do think it’s important to be an independent and self-sufficient developer but I’ve never progressed as much as when I had a mentor-ish person to work with.
Also, not so long ago, a recruiter asked me how do I feel about my work being criticized, ie. code review. I was surprised that people still feel that a code review is a walk of shame for the person whose code is under review. I told her, and with honest conviction, that after a good code review I will have learned at least as much as I’ve had working that code.
