Four Tips to Raise Your GRE Score

Texas Engineering

The GRE test is essential for your application to most graduate schools, especially in engineering and science fields. Following these four tips can help you prepare for taking the GRE and raising your score:

  1. Reduce the unknown. The GRE is a timed test administered on a computer. Practicing questions ahead of time and understanding the test format will give you a good idea of how much time you can spend on each question.
  2. Study early and often. Set daily and weekly goals for GRE study time. Make flashcards and enlist your friends to help you learn vocabulary words. Search for prompts online and practice writing essays in a time crunch. GRE prep materials are a great way to practice math problems.
  3. Take practice tests. Set dates for full practice tests and treat them as if they are the real thing. Set a score goal ahead of time and strategize to improve based on previous practice tests. Grade your practice tests and analyze your performance on each section. Focus on your weak spots and come up with a plan for improvement.
  4. Make sure your preferred schools receive your score. When you take the exam, you can send your scores officially to up to four graduate institutions for free. Designate your score recipients at the test center to avoid delays in your application processing in the fall.

Remember to send your scores to the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin for program-specific information and updates. Learn more: http://www.engr.utexas.edu/graduate.
