There’s a new AI toy in town and it’s called AudioCraft.

It works great. In fact it works so well that it’s finally worth paying attention to the entire “Text to Audio” category of AI now. This could really be the “Stable Diffusion moment of Audio”.

And in this article I will explain what AudioCraft does, as well as show you how YOU can install and run AudioCraft on your OWN computer for FREE.

AudioCraft Components

Technically, AudioCraft is made up of several different modules. It’s a tool, but also comes with models, and the models come in different sizes and different purposes.

But for most people, the most important thing is what it can do, so let me just explain it this way. There are largely 2 modules:

  1. MusicGen: lets you generate music
  2. AudioGen: lets you generate sound effects

This is pretty much all you need to know to get started. If you want to generate music, use MusicGen. But if you want to generate all kinds of sound effects, such as “rainy day sound”, “walking inside a cave”, etc., you can use AudioGen.

Some Examples

Before we go in, let me share some examples I created while playing around with AudioCraft.

Note that the audio clips are accompanied by images generated with Stable Diffusion XL (which you can also easily install with one click. Learn more here: https://medium.com/@cocktailpeanut/how-to-run-stable-diffusion-xl-on-your-own-computer-with-one-click-4c193813cb06)

1. Using MusicGen to generate music from prompt

Prompt: “Japanese city pop music mashed up with Techno”

  • Prompt 1: “Bluegrass meets Amen Break”
  • Prompt 2: “Traditional African Musicians playing elevator music”

2. Using MusicGen to generate music from another music clip and a prompt

  • Audio Input: “Toccata and Fugue in D Minor” by Johann Sebastian Bach
  • Prompt: “A dubstep version”

3. Using AudioGen to generate sound effects

Great! So how do I install?

It all sounds awesome, and you must be excited.

But the thing is, when you finally visit the AudioCraft website with all your excitement, you will be greeted with the following installation steps:

Unless you’re a developer, this is probably not your cup of tea.

How to Install AudioCraft with One Click

Fortunately, we no longer have to manually run those things. You can use a completely free and open source application called Pinokio to “one click install” AudioCraft and get started playing with it instantly!

Step 1. Install Pinokio

Pinokio is a new kind of browser that lets you easily install and run all kinds of programs that are normally difficult to install and run, such as AI tools.

Instead of having to follow all the esoteric instructions on some GitHub page, Pinokio automates everything so you don’t have to do it manually. First check out this video:

You can get started by downloading Pinokio from https://pinokio.computer

Step 2. Install AudioCraft

Once you have Pinokio installed, installing AudioCraft almost feels like web browsing….because Pinokio IS a browser. A browse that lets you easily download and install applications.

First go to the “Discover” page on Pinokio, and you’ll find “AudioGradio” on the Featured list:

Click Install, and it will ask you to select the folder to store the script, and download the install script. Feel free to just press “Download” to save to the default folder name (Everything is stored under Pinokio’s isolated file system so you don’t have to worry about Pinokio polluting your global system)

Once it’s downloaded, it will automatically send you to the home dashboard where you can click “Install” to kick off the installation process:

After the installation has finished, Pinokio will once again send you to the dashboard home page, but this time instead of the “Install” button, you will see two buttons:

  1. Start Audiogen
  2. Start Musicgen

Now you’re done! Just click those buttons to start either the Audiogen or Muscigen.

Here’s the full flow:
