“Who taught you to divide things so equally?”

The Lion, the Donkey, and the Fox

One day the lion, the donkey, and the fox decided to go hunting together after it was decided that whatever they caught would be shared amongst the three of them. After killing a large buck, they decided to sit for a hearty meal.

The lion asked the donkey to split the meal into three equal parts and take his pick of meal. The lion, in great resentment towards the donkey’s hasty pick, seized the donkey in his mighty jaw and tore the donkey to pieces. He then told the fox to divide the spoils in half and take his pick of meal. The fox gathered everything into one great pile except for a tiny portion he reserved for himself.

“Ah, my friend,” asked the lion, “who taught you to divide things so equally?”
“I need no other lesson,” replied the fox, “than that of the donkey’s fate.”

It is better to learn from the mistakes of others than by our own.
