THE WOW EMERGENCY FUND — CODE GREEN’S SUPPORT

Code Green is pleased to announce its support with the launch of the World of Women Emergency Fund!

The new Fund — which will sit within the recently launched WoW Foundation — will support a range of different planetary emergencies ranging from rising conflict to climate breakdown, health epidemics to natural disasters.

WoW have asked Code Green to provide our philanthropic advice — including helping to select the thematic focus areas of the Fund, vetting potential recipient organizations and establishing key funding windows.

An initial pledge of $500,000 is being made for humanitarian support in conflict zones around the world.

The funds were raised thanks to the World of Women Galaxy drop, with 25% of the royalties allocated to Code Green.

Over the coming weeks, they’ll be a focus on 5 conflict areas:

  • Ukraine — now officially recognized as the most devastating conflict in Europe since the Second World War, tens of thousands of civilians have been killed, 11.6 million people displaced from their homes, and many more subjected to the most appalling conditions, with gender-based violence on the rise
  • Gaza Strip and West Bank — around 2.1 million people need urgent humanitarian assistance, among them 1 million children due to a recent escalation of violence, the closure of the Gaza Strip, and the economic impacts of Covid-19 — with women and children hit the hardest.
  • Myanmar — since 2017, more than 745,000 Rohingya refugees, including 400,000 children, have fled violence in Myanmar and settled in Cox’s Bazar District, Bangladesh. As a stateless Muslim minority group in Myanmar, they have faced discrimination, violence, and extreme poverty for decades.
  • Uganda — has had to contend with a brutal 20-year insurgency in the north and an influx of refugees fleeing hunger, instability, and violence from neighboring countries. In fact, Uganda is now the largest refugee-hosting nation in Africa, with nearly 1.4 million refugees — mainly from South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Burundi fleeing conflict situations. There are fears that there will soon be nearly 1 million child refugees in Uganda.
  • Yemen — is the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, with millions on the edge of starvation and families struggling to survive. Over two million have been displaced by conflict. Medicines and medical supplies are extremely scarce, and only half of the country’s health facilities are fully functioning.

For each conflict zone — we’ll be spotlighting a new recipient organization each week, outlining the support WoW will be providing.

This week the focus is Ukraine, with a $100,000 grant made to CHOOSE LOVE — a charity that provides vital support to refugees around the world and is pioneering a new movement in humanitarian aid that is fast, flexible, transparent, and accountable.

Matty Gladstone, Head of Programmes at Choose Love said: ‘Thank you so much for your support of people affected by the crisis in Ukraine. These funds will make a huge difference. They will be used to fund evacuations, urgent medical care and supplies, hot food, legal advice and services, aid distribution, and teams working to build long-term support for people facing such unimaginable circumstances. Choose Love is also funding teams supporting marginalized communities in and fleeing Ukraine, such as the LGBTQIA+ community and BIPOC communities.’

Through our support to WoW’s Emergency Fund, we aim to take action on humanitarian emergencies, as and when they happen — so that when disaster strikes, we can swiftly allocate funding to those who need it most and help those leading the recovery to be equipped with the tools they need to make an urgent difference on the front lines.

More to come next week….!
